The deep sorrow caused by a major loss, particularly of a close family member or personal friend, is an experience that few human beings escape. The joy, comfort and security of having close emotional bonds is matched with the sorrow experienced when they are broken through death, divorce, serious illness or other tragic losses in one’s life. In the process of experiencing grief are the steps involved in living through grieving, which is referred to as the grieving process–allowing the impact of the loss to be fully experienced as one of life’s major milestones.
Grief is natural, normal and a part of the human experience. As difficult as it may be, there are positive outcomes of this journey and success is achieved as one learns to cope with the loss and find a new way of living a good life with the positive memories held in a new balance of the old and the new.
